What If…

Layla Rosa (UK)

A groundbreaking performance combining circus-theatre and visual installation. On the ground and in the air this is a compelling mixture of aerial movement, video image and live and digital sound-scape.

What if… was born from a personal cultural journey into Layla’s lost Saudi Arabian heritage and explores the icon of the veil within contemporary society.

Layla Rosa is a founder member, artistic director, performer and choreographer with acclaimed performance collective Shunt. She is one of the UK’s most established contemporary circus and performance artists. After a year of research with the Muslim women’s groups, Muslim employees and artists based at Oxford House in East London, Layla tries to answer some of her own questions.

From this research has evolved an emotive, semi-autobiographical performance that reaches out to anyone who has questioned their cultural expectations.

Suitable for ages 8 to adult

Presented in association with La Breche, Lower Normandy’s Centre for Circus Creation. Developed in association with Jackson’s Lane, Farnham Maltings and Shunt.
